CINCINNATI and MINNEAPOLIS, April 29, 2013—– PeopleNet®, the only provider of innovative open technology to the transportation industry that reduces cost per mile by integrating information across the entire organization, today announced that its open technology and Professional Services group have helped Heckmann Corporation’s fleet create a high-efficiency, paperless operation for the oil and gas industry environmental services leader. Making the announcement at the National Private Truck Council Education Management Conference and Exhibition being held in Cincinnati, April 28-30, PeopleNet President Brian McLaughlin said, “Serving a complicated, high-growth industry with a vast amount of required regulatory documentation can put a stranglehold on fleet operations. In addition, the company’s aggressive fleet expansion needs standardized work processes to ensure efficiency. Our Professional Services group has helped the company create workflows that have eliminated for one customer more than 700,000 pieces of paper, improved their customers’ efficiency by $1.4 million, shrunk receivables aging from 120 days to 20 days, eliminated $1200 a day in carrying costs, and improved driver safety.”
The use of hydrofracturing has exploded as an economical technique for extracting shale gas. Heckmann Water Resources (HWR) moves, treats, and disposes of water generated by the process, which requires extensive compliance documentation. As a result, Heckmann has continued to expand with acquisitions and organic growth that more than doubled the fleet to over 1000 trucks at the end of 2012.
Heckmann Vice President of Business Technology Mark Ridgley explained, “PeopleNet has helped us standardize operations and given management visibility into each site’s operation. They’ve helped us adapt the software for each region’s different laws. And integrating PeopleNet’s open platform with the company’s financial system and proprietary dispatch application has been key to becoming more efficient.”
Professional Services designed customized work order forms that help Heckmann drivers complete any type of pick-up or disposal work order without touching a single piece of paper. The dispatch application sends work orders through the PeopleNet system, which walks the driver through all required information. The information entered by the driver is captured in the back-end system for accurate paperless invoicing. Drivers capture customer signatures with PeopleNet’s TABLET® to immediately initiate invoicing, along with the required electronic documentation.
By successfully petitioning to have electronic forms accepted as legal documentation, Heckmann eliminated handling five to six compliance forms and supporting work tickets on about 200 loads per day—savings that according to Ridgley, “is a huge help for our customers, who no longer have to allot space for storing physical documents for years. It also saves the cost of forms purchased from the state.” As we’ve become more efficient, HEKNet has become known for helping our customers become more efficient.”
In addition to simplifying invoice approval for customers without having to ensure required compliance documents are attached, customers are happier about the smaller volume of invoices they receive as a result of HEKNet. A customer in East Texas eliminated 2 million pieces of paper annually by getting one invoice per week instead of 18,000 per year (one for each time each well was visited with compliance documents).
“HEKNet has been a real asset in keeping our safety priority in front of drivers,” says Ridgley. “Every time a driver turns on the ignition PeopleNet sends a safety quiz that the driver must complete before receiving dispatch information. It’s only three to five questions, but it reminds the driver how important safety is.
“PeopleNet Professional Services is more like the logistics extension of our staff than merely a vendor. They always take on with confidence anything we’re looking at.”
