LAS VEGAS and MINNEAPOLIS, March 5, 2013—PeopleNet (www.peoplenetonline.com), the only provider of innovative open technology to the transportation industry that reduces cost per mile by integrating information across the entire organization, today announced that Luckey Logistics is using the PeopleNet EventAlerter iPad application to instantly update management about key events that impact safety. The announcement was made at the Truckload Carriers Association’s annual convention being held in Las Vegas, March 3-6. Luckey Logistics IT Manager Patrick “Barney” Barnwell explained, “We are strong advocates of portable computing as a strategy for helping managers do their jobs better and more easily. PeopleNet provides ample daily and weekly reporting. However, when it comes to safety, it’s critical to know what’s happening when it happens. EventAlerter immediately sends all details about a critical event, so managers can take appropriate, timely action, day or night, 24/7. It’s our best bet for supporting driver and public safety. Our shop foreman also keeps an eye on these events since they affect brake and tire replacement.”
The PeopleNet system sends an alert to iPad, iPhone or Android device users. Users can access all relevant event data through the alert. For instance, if there were a rollover-stability or sudden-deceleration event, a satellite map of the incident is provided along with pre- and post-incident trails, all of the particulars of the incident, the identity of the driver, the driver’s available hours of service (HOS), and their past 24-hour HOS activity. The last five safety events for the driver are also displayed to help assess the emergence of a negative trend.

Luckey Logistics operates 11 terminals, four warehouses, and five rail yards in addition to managing a 160-truck fleet, half of which are owner-operators. PeopleNet is installed in all 80 company-owned trucks, which according to Barnwell, “expands our staff’s capabilities and allows us to run lean with a 15-person staff. We’re looking forward to an iPad app for fault code monitoring as well. Standard fault code reporting alone has significantly reduced jumpstarts this winter. We know that an alert app will help contain maintenance expenses.”
PeopleNet Senior Vice President of Tailored Solutions Randy Boyles said, “Safety and maintenance managers appreciate the immediacy and detail that EventAlerter provides. They know they’re getting all the information they need when they need it, whether they knew they needed it or not. The beauty of this app is that it synthesizes information from multiple places into a single, comprehensive alert at their fingertips.”
arch 4, 2013—PeopleNet (www.peoplenetonline.com), the only provider of innovative open technology to the transportation industry that reduces cost per mile by integrating information across the entire organization, today announced the introduction of the only trailer tracking offering by an onboard computing provider that requires no additional trailer hardware. In making the announcement at the Truckload Carriers Association annual convention being held in Las Vegas, March 3-6, PeopleNet Executive Vice President of Operations Rick Ochsendorf said, “Our Tethered Trailer Tracking solution uses the existing Power Line Communication (PLC) cable for exchanging data between the trailer’s ABS (anti-lock brake system) and the PeopleNet system through the Multi-Bus Adapter with a PLC chip. This configuration provides the most cost-effective trailer tracking solution for reducing the cost of lost trailers, eliminating manual yard checks, managing trailer detention, and improving utilization information for more efficient maintenance. In addition to being easy to use, there also is significant saving in time-consuming installation and labor cost. Since a typical fleet has around a 2:1 trailer-to-tractor ratio, that can be tremendous.”
Once connected to the tractor, the trailer’s unique serial number is sent to the PeopleNet system, which in turn creates location-based hook and drop events for the trailer. Event information is stored, including the date/time, location, vehicle and trailer odometer reading. Odometer readings, in particular, provide a history that enables accurate usage-based maintenance.
