Mobile cybersecurity is a top priority for both carriers and telematics manufacturers, and PeopleNet is taking a prominent role in leading the industry and developing solutions to proactively address and eliminate the risk of this emerging threat to connected fleets.
In addition to serving on the National Motor Freight Truck Association’s heavy-vehicle cybersecurity team, we recently sponsored the first-ever Commercial CyberTruck Challenge earlier this summer in Warren, Mich. Hosted by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), the week-long event brought together more than 100 of the country’s top engineers, cybersecurity experts, OEMs, suppliers, students, law enforcement and government representatives for a comprehensive, collaborative discussion of cybersecurity principles, best practices for the trucking industry and “hack-a-thon” using real trucks and components.
Through a combination of classroom education and hands-on demonstrations, Challenge participants learned hardware, software and systems reverse-engineering, component analysis and communications protocols to understand and prevent vulnerabilities. The Challenge culminated in a two-day “hack-a-thon,” during which researchers and pre-screened ethical “hackers” from major companies and academic institutions joined forces to bolster cyber-defense capabilities for a wide range of connected vehicles and systems, including two semi trucks.
