PeopleNet Debuts Industry’s First Wireless Auto-Pairing Backup Camera for Tractor Trailers

New backup camera automatically pairs tractor and trailer and wirelessly transmits video to an in-cab display

ORLANDO – Oct. 23, 2017 — PeopleNet® (, a leading provider of fleet mobility technology, announced today its Video Intelligence solution has added the industry’s first wireless trailer backup camera to automatically pair with tractors to stream live video in-cab. The fully-integrated Video Intelligence solution, which also includes forward and side-facing cameras, now allows fleets to use 360 degrees of video data. PeopleNet’s Video Intelligence Solution triggers video from company-controlled settings from a truck’s Onboard Event Recording (OER), augmenting traditional driver and truck analytics with onboard event recording.

PeopleNet’s Video Intelligence backup camera is powered by the anti-lock braking system (ABS) of the trailer and uses a transmitter to automatically pair it to any tractor equipped with a PeopleNet Video Intelligence receiver. This pairing also allows for wireless streaming of live video on an in-cab display when the vehicle is in reverse, reducing blind spots for the driver. Because the system is not battery-powered, it never needs to be charged.

“The introduction of this powerful backup camera gives fleets and their drivers better visibility, helping to navigate backups and provide video in the event of a rear-end collision,” said Jim Angel, PeopleNet vice president of Video Intelligence Solutions. “Adding this trailer camera to our solution is part of the evolution of the Video Intelligence platform to meet the safety and compliance needs of the customers we serve.”

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), nearly 17 percent of all fatal truck-car collisions in 2015 were the result of a passenger vehicle rear-ending a large truck.[1] In that same time period there were 25 fatal truck-related accidents that were a result of starting or backing up improperly.[2] With the introduction of the trailer camera, PeopleNet Video Intelligence provides users with visual information in the case of a rear-end accident.  It also provides drivers with enhanced visibility to prevent a potential accident from occurring in the first place.

In addition to the new backup camera view, PeopleNet’s Video Intelligence solution utilizes forward-facing and left and right side view cameras to create a 360-degree view around the cab and trailer of the truck. Launched in 2016, PeopleNet’s Video Intelligence was the first solution on the market to fully integrate with a fleet management system. PeopleNet’s Onboard Event Recording (OER) allows video to be triggered by company-controlled settings, including sudden acceleration or hard braking. These videos are then displayed in the PeopleNet Fleet Manager, a secure online web portal for back-office communications and carrier fleet management functions.

The Video Intelligence solution also integrates with the Safety Analytics dashboard to monitor driver behavior, posted speeding events and hours of service (HOS) violations. The dashboard also captures Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) points and violations data provided by Vigillo, LLC, an industry leader in CSA reporting systems.

PeopleNet’s wireless backup camera for trailers was debuted at American Trucking Associations (ATA) Management Conference & Exhibition (MCE), held in Orlando from October 21-25, 2017. For more information and resources on PeopleNet’s Video Intelligence solution, visit
