This post is the first in a series explaining the Internet of Transportation Things™ (IoTT) and how PeopleNet plans to change the fleet management industry based on this platform.
If you follow technology news online, you’ve no doubt heard of the Internet of Things (IoT) – referring to the ability of “things” to talk to each other, enabled by the internet.
According to the Harvard Business Review, in 2015, “…not only will 75 percent of the world’s population have access to the internet. So will some six billion devices.”

No longer do you need to keep a journal of physical activity, call a cab to pick you up, or remember to set your thermostat before leaving the house. Fitbit fitness bands wirelessly speak to your computer or phone to track your activities and wellbeing, Uber taxi service allows your phone to not only summon a taxi to your location, but view the cab’s location on its way to you and pay directly from your credit card, and the Nest thermostat can be wirelessly set in your home by an app on your phone, no matter where you are. This concept is completely changing the world that we live in.
With all of this in mind, we at PeopleNet would like to introduce you to the Internet of Transportation Things™ (IoTT.)
A Transportation “Thing” is a powered device, sensor, microcontroller, and radio transceiver to communicate data specifically to improve the transportation industry – including vehicle systems such as stability control or tire pressure, driver interactions such as in-cab coaching or re-routing, or data generated collected to support features such as fuel tax reporting or traffic patterns – and the list of possibilities is endless. As we move forward, all of this will be communicated entirely through our in-cab mobile gateways using wired Ethernet, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, and providing a path to the internet over our managed wireless networks.
It’s not a new concept for the trucking world, but where our future lies is firmly within the ability to integrate enterprise (back-office) systems and mobile (GPS tracking, communication, telematics) technologies with real-time predictive analytics that help all carriers make more effective decisions about everything—people, trucks, routes and more.
