The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) begins their nationwide initiative to reduce the impact of drunk driving this week. Annually, the NHTSA puts on this campaign in tandem with law enforcement to raise awareness about this dangerous crime.
Through the combined effort of increased police presence on the roads, social media campaigning, and encouraging law enforcement agencies to share NHTSA materials with the public, the crackdown aims to spread one message: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
These materials contain statistics on the fatal and financial costs of drunk driving — for example, “among the drivers between the ages of 18 and 34, who were killed in crashes over Labor Day weekend in 2013, 45 percent of those fatalities involved a drunk driver with a BAC of .08 or higher.”
According to the NHTSA, research shows that high visibility campaigns like this “reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.”
