PeopleNet Develops g3 ServicesTM New Standard for Onboard Open Technology Platform Development
BOSTON - October 16, 2005 - PeopleNet, the leading provider of onboard computing and mobile communications systems to the nation's transportation, announced the development of g3 Services, a major enhancement to its latest generation onboard computing platform. g3 Services, patterned after the model known as Web Services whereby data can be exchanged in an open manner, will allow fleets the ability to customize onboard applications to their specific needs as well as to deploy and integrate new onboard software applications more rapidly.
"Traditional onboard computing and mobile communication systems have been built around a closed architecture which has stymied innovation and limited fleet technology return on investment," says John Sarto, Chairman and CEO of PeopleNet. "With g3 Services, fleets can now choose new applications to integrate and can even develop their own applications."
Setting the new standard for open-platform onboard technology, g3 Services will allow external onboard applications, developed by a third party or the customer to communicate directly with the g3 onboard platform through the USB port. Applications can be written on any "smart device" that runs its own operating system such as a handheld device or smart display.
g3 Services, currently in development, will be available to our partners in early 2006 and will enable development of key applications throughout the year, such as:
*
In - cab navigation - graphical, turn by turn navigation of a pre-defined route on a graphical display; also can determine real time out of route situations.
*
Expanded /handheld computing and display options- suite of ruggedized, handheld computing options and displays from multiple providers; enables key applications such as signature capture and bar coding applications.
Displays will include key driver features such as touch screen, color, and voice to text capabilities.
*
In-cab scanning and faxing- in-cab receipt and deliver of scanned or imaged documents which increases velocity of billing information to the back office.
*
Integration to collision avoidance systems - integration to leading systems for consistent and timely data delivery.
*
Tethered trailer tracking including tire, reefer, and brake sensors - RFID technology at its finest to manage key assets beyond the cab.
Many partners and customers have already expressed interest in integrating with the PeopleNet g3 platform. Partners that have an interest in developing applications for PeopleNet customers can sign up for early interface development at this year's ATA conference.
The g3 computing platform has been in the market for over a year and has widespread adoption across the PeopleNet customer base. It was developed based upon three key principles - smart, open and multi-network -- that have revolutionized how onboard computers perform:
"While others in the industry have announced intentions to follow this path, PeopleNet remains the only company to attain all three tenants," according to Sarto. g3 Services deployment will occur through the company's Over-the-Air-Programming (OTAP) feature.
