J.P. Donmoyer Upgrades to PeopleNet's Onboard Computing System
Bulk hauler chooses PeopleNet technology to boost productivity and innovation
MINNEAPOLIS-May 24, 2005-PeopleNet, the leading provider of onboard computing and mobile communications systems to the nation's transportation industry, today announced that J.P. Donmoyer, Inc., a regional dry bulk and truckload carrier based in Ono, Pa., has equipped its fleet with PeopleNet's tracking and mobile communications system.
Donmoyer, which operates a fleet of 110 power units, 85 pneumatic dry bulk tanker trailers and about 30 flatbeds and vans, hauls primarily lime, limestone, fly ash and coal for industrial customers based primarily in the Northeast. It supplements that freight with animal feeds.
"We are committed to supporting our employees and coaching them to exceed the expectations of ourselves and our customers," says Frank Costanzo, VP/General Manager. "The PeopleNet system has helped us to provide the tools and information to accomplish that." Donmoyer used to manually calculate fuel efficiency by hooking up a laptop to the engine and downloading all the data manually, according to Costanzo. "Our credibility with our drivers suffered because by the time we got the information and tried to address driver behavior, the event had been long forgotten."
"The PerformX feature allows us to track miles per gallon, idling and PTO economy in real-time. Not only does it save us time and improve accuracy, it has helped us manage our drivers better. We can communicate more intelligently because we have the data right in our hands and we can make changes right away."
In addition to finding instant feedback less threatening, drivers have also adapted to PeopleNet's keyboard and display screen. "Our previous onboard system was cumbersome and required our drivers to push all kinds of buttons. The PeopleNet system is far more user friendly. It has a keyboard and display screen that makes it very simple for the drivers to get their dispatch instructions or send an e-mail home to their family."
Converting from his previous onboard technology proved to be somewhat challenging, according to Costanzo. "We had used that system as solely a communication tool to dispatch our drivers and we realized that if we wanted to be better we needed to look at pulling the technology through all of our departments and integrating it with our other management systems," he said. "This information is crucial in our drive for continuous improvement."
Headquartered in Minneapolis, PeopleNet is the fastest-growing provider of Internet-based onboard computing and mobile communications systems to the transportation industry, including truckload, LTL, private, and service fleets.
